Antique Green Natural EMERALD Old Mine Cut Diamond Halo Hinged Bangle Bracelet 14k Solid Gold Rosy & YG Glowing Victorian Edwardian Twist
I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
What a head turner! This striking antique statement bracelet has a gorgeous glowing twist fabrication for the hinged bangle portion, set at the top with a large natural emerald surrounded by a halo of old mine cut diamonds. The condition and color (and size) of the emerald is quite fantastic, and the old cut diamonds are also fascinating in that they are mix of old mine cut, several of them being elongated while others are more round. And looking at the intensity of color of the emerald, we certainly suspect it's Colombian, and have had some jeweler friends concur, but I haven't taken the piece apart to send it off.
This one has all the glow and sparkle but also a really wonderful antique patina. It is solid 14k gold (as in it is not gold plated or gold filled, but the twist forms of the bangle are tubes with vacant space in the middle as most all antique bangles usually are). It was fabricated with the bloomed or layered gold technique where the 14k yellow gold is layered over 14k solid rose gold so that with age and wear, the gold "blooms" a gorgeous rosy hue to the areas that are raised and rubbed over 100 years. The result is a delicious rosy gold hue (not the vibrant pink rose gold of today) with a rich and buttery yellow gold glow. Certainly can't be found on modern jewelry which makes it so sought after!
This was originally one of those convertible antique pieces where the cluster face could have been unhooked and removed from the bangle to attach it on to another piece, perhaps a brooch or a hairpin, sometimes even a ring. However, the pin with latch has since been permanently soldered to the rim of the setting. This is not in the least visible while wearing as it is hidden under the diamond halo but must have been at risk of coming separate on its own that someone had it soldered to remain permanently pinned in place, which is now just a part of its history and story.
Beautiful antique natural emerald and diamond hinged bangle with safety chain.
The top side of the bracelet is set with a row of natural emeralds that graduate slightly in size, alternating with pairs of little single cut diamonds between each of the larger emeralds.
Wonderful to find a piece of this age with the emerald in such excellent condition! I purchased this in Europe, as such it has the numerical hallmark used there of 585, which equates to 14k gold, along with the maker's initials C.B.
This one is amazing to wear with the pop of color and the glints of sparkle. It looks beautiful in a stack with other pieces as well. It has a slight rosiness from age and patina, so lovely. Opens and closes securely and functions well, with the addition of a safety chain as well.
Please note the measurements as I have small hands and wrists and it is difficult to determine scale from the zoomed photos I am required to present for detail.
MEASUREMENTS:
It weighs 17.5grams. It is about 7 inches around the inside with a tape measure wrapped within it the best I can do (this is an estimate as I can't get the tape exactly nested). Inside dimensions are 59.6mm by 52.2mm if I measure the distance across the opening in each direction, if you want to compare that to some of your other bangles. I have a 5 1/2 inch wrist and it is too large for me. : ( I can slide it off and on without opening, and it does spin around my wrist. And with the safety chain, it opens to slide over a larger wrist.
The emerald is about 9.5x8.5mm just measuring the exposed parts, it extends under the bezel an unknown amount. I would not remove it for exact weight but estimates to around 2.7 to 3.2 carats. The diamonds are 2.3 to 2.5mm each and there are 16 of them. Again I would not remove them but probably around .8 carat total weight in diamonds?
The gemstone and diamond halo setting is 16.6x17.4mm and rises 8mm off the wrist. The twist part of the bangle is about 7.2mm north south on the wrist.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Surprisingly no dings or dents as we often see on bangles of this age. The hinge and clasp do wiggle a bit but once snapped closed, it cannot be opened without the push button clasp. As mentioned the emerald and diamond halo setting was originally removable and connected to the rectangular face of the setting by a pin - the latch of the pin which has been soldered to remain permanent. However the halo setting can still tilt in the setting if you wiggle it side to side. This is just how it was made, it is in no danger of coming free since as mentioned, it is attached by a pin hinge that is permanently soldered. And even when shaking it aggressively, it does not rattle.
The emerald is in better than most condition for an antique with a lovely sheen and polish and not the matte finish we sometimes see on antique emeralds. It does have a few nibbles and flea bites to the facet edges, a shallow scratch seen under magnification and a few of the tiniest smaller than hairline creases we see on emeralds, these from natural inclusions reaching the surface.
The outside bead prongs to the diamonds look quite good but I always recommend gentle wear on my antique pieces with multiple small stones in settings like these. Varying hues to the very old diamonds and some frosty natural inclusions but no dark or glaring carbon. Two stones are chipped on the inside edge where they remain complete in form and fill the setting, but have a little flake of loss leaving an unpolished area, this is not really eye visible.
One area of the bangle has wear to the yellow gold layer revealing a more irregular texture over the solid 14k rose gold below. Again the piece is not plated or gold filled, it is hallmarked, certainly solid gold, and I tested these areas to ensure the underlying rose gold is also 14k solid gold so there is no doubt there. Along with the common sense that we don't see large natural emeralds and diamonds which were quite valuable and rare for the period tacked on to base metal pieces, so there are no concerns but I just wanted to mention that little bit of age related deterioration to the gold.
Sturdy and wearable piece! Not another one like it and really striking to wear. My items do well without paperwork and I don't like taking them apart for certification so I sell it based on what I paid to acquire it.
Beautiful coloring, shine and perfect antique patina. Some surface wear and a few scuffs or scratches but no real dings or dents.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
