Victorian ANTIQUE Rose Cut Diamond Cluster Dormeuse Earrings French 18k Gold Solid 1.7 Carat Face Up Daisy Halo Dangle Belle Epoque
ABOUT:
The way these antique rose cut cluster earrings catch the light! With nicely domed dutch rose cuts that emit a beautiful glitter and bright white color and with open backed settings compared to many rose cuts we see that are closed and foiled (which can age over time). These are of a size and scale that are perfect to dress up or down. I love these - a classic antique look that remains so timeless and wearable. They face up at about 1.7 carat total (actual carat weight is less as they are rose cuts with more surface area and flat backs.)
These are all original French earrings from the Victorian period. At the center is a slightly larger rose cut diamond raised and then surrounded by a halo of ten smaller rose cuts. Then with one additional rose cut at the top for good measure. : )
Found in France with their hallmark for 18k gold.
These are inserted into the ear from the back toward the front where the hooked ear wire is latched into the little catch behind the top diamond at the front of the earring.
Would be a beautiful something old for a bride. These are often dainty and petite (they are translated "sleepers" in French because they were originally meant to be worn overnight : ) so please note the measurements. Of course we don't recommend 24/7 wear on these old pieces now due to age. These are intricate 125 year old gold hinges so it takes some practice and tactile strength to latch them while on the ear, just like all dormouse - but they remain super popular.
Antique box is not included but I have a cool antique pin box I can lay these in so it will come in some collectible period appropriate housing : )
Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The clusters are 9.3mm in diameter. They are 15mm from the top of the ear wire to the bottom of the cluster. The tiered cluster portions have a depth of 6.7mm (not including the hinged backs).
The center diamonds are 4.7 and 4.9mm. The outlining diamonds are 2 to 2.2mm each. I would not remove them for exact weight. Like most rose cuts they face up larger than their actual carat weight with their flat backs and domed tops. So they wear as the appearance of 1.7 carat combined / total.
The pair weighs 3 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
This pair is one of the best I've had in terms of the hinges and latches. The hinges don't wobble, the latches latch securely so from a latch perspective this is as good as I can find for 125+ year old pieces.. Having said that, there is some wear to the prongs, most especially to the outside edge ones holding the diamonds so we recommend gentle wear. The center stones are well set but the outlining diamonds are less secure. None of the stones move and some reinforcing can always be done, but this can sometimes muddy the appearance and overwork the piece so I am selling them as is, as most of my buyers prefer original condition. I pretty much always recommend gentler wear on my 100+ year old pieces with multiple small stones, but again once put on, these are in no danger of falling off.
The rose cuts have a bright color, a lovely rainbow fire and a nice dome where they are suspended with open backs to catch the light. We do see some typical antique diamond quirks - some faint frosty inclusions, an unpolished girdle edge, non uniform shapes and sizes and a few with a chip to the outside edge but rose cuts from this period always have a more rough and untamed appearance which adds to their loveliness. They all fill the settings and appear complete to the eye in shape and form.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )

Many of my listings include group shots – I find the comparisons between pieces help show scale, diamond hues, etc. All items in group shots are inventory, but refer to the website to see what items have sold out and to watch for new listings from the grouping to appear on the home page.
