RARE 1700s Chiffre Triangle Rose Cut DIAMOND Ring French ANTiQUE Cobblestone Cluster Buttercup 18k Gold Fleur de Lis Victorian Band
I am selling an assortment of vintage to antique jewelry and rings which I have hunted for and gathered from around the world. Some examples seen in the last photo - thanks for stopping by!
ABOUT:
Personal collection release of a rare and uncommon antique cut diamond. It's the only one I have in my collection but I have a kite shaped rose cut from France so I'm letting this one go.
Beautiful French early Victorian antique buttercup ring set with five varying shaped and sized rose cut diamonds in a foiled closed back setting.
My favorite part is the TRIANGULAR rose cut diamond, like a long skinny trillion rose cut. I don't mean to use shouty caps but it is such a cool stone, not a common cut to be found. An instagram friend had helped me identify it as a rare chiffre cut diamond, which is found in 17th century Renaissance jewelry and also in some mid 18th century Rococo pieces. Since the shank has a French hallmark used in the 1800s, we think it was likely re-shanked in antiquity, and that the ring face is from the 1700s. It certainly looks quite old.
In his 1995 book Diamond Cuts in Historic Jewellery, Herbert Tillander notes that this type of three faceted shield-shaped diamond has been known at least since the early 14th century and is termed the chiffre cut after the word ‘cipher’.
The chunky rose cuts are clustered together in a natural organic way almost like shards of kryptonite or a cluster of crystals : ) It gives it a really unique and moody vibe. And although the diamond are small, they have depths with some quite chunky giving it a 3D effect from the side and the cobblestone texture of the cluster design.
These are all set on a platform held up in a buttercup setting. From the shoulders extend reverse fleur de lis designs graduating down the top half of the ring. The gold has a lovely antique patina with dark areas in the recesses giving it a great ancient look.
Awesome and uncommon piece, perfect for stacking to add some history and sparkle : )
Antique box not included. Please note the measurements.
MEASUREMENTS:
Ring is currently about a size 7 1/2. It weighs 3.4 grams. Ring face is about 8mm across. The rounder diamonds are 2.5 to 3mm each and the long and skinny triangular one is 5mm long.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
Please note that all my pieces are in estate condition, especially considering age of over 100 years. The diamonds read quite gray and warm from age to the closed back. The diamonds also do have some imperfections under magnification. The diamonds have chips and rough or frosty edges here or there. I don't find it to be very evident to the eye, as the nature of the design is this style of rough cut shards of diamonds clustered together. But something to look for as they do have some bumps and bruises from their age. There are thin areas of wear to the gold at the edges of the fleur de lis and some build up, but these old pieces shouldn't soak or be submerged so I just wiped it with a cloth. Typical antique diamonds with natural inclusions.
Still a fantastic and unique piece with that very beautiful warm antique gold coloring and uncommon sparkling diamond cluster that is very eye catching.
But of course due to age - Please note this piece is not in mint condition. As with all antique jewelry, please handle these old rings with care and very gentle wear. You should avoid getting them wet and they are better for special occasion wear.
I would be delighted if you'd follow me in my shop. Thanks for stopping by!
