ABOUT:
Ever sought after classics with nice size chunky old mine cut diamonds! Beautiful and eye catching French antique dormeuse / sleeper dangle earrings in 18k gold totaling almost 1.5 carat total weight in diamonds. Comes as pictured in an antique earring box from France!
Each earring holds a 5.2mm old mine cut diamond with an open back, in the tall ornate prongs with an additional old mine cut at the top for added sparkle. Victorian era pair of earrings that I acquired in France. So eye catching and elegant in the lovely antique gold.
These French "dormeuse" earrings translate to "sleepers" - meant to be dainty enough and comfortable to sleep in to keep the ear holes open for earring wear. Of course we don't recommend 24/7 wear on these 100+ year old pieces now with their dainty and intricate gold hinges. Note that one of the lever backs is weak But it does latch closed - see more notes below, but this pair needs gentler wear and handling.
Found in Paris. These have the antique French hallmarks on the posts of each of them for 18k gold along with some goldsmith stamps.

Please note the detailed measurements that I always provide, as I have small fingers and it can be difficult to determine scale from pictures where I am required to show zoomed in detail.
SIZE & MEASUREMENTS:
The diamonds are about 5x5.2mm each and chunky cuts, one weighing about 0.68 carat and the other about .64 carat. The little old mine cut accents on top are about 2.4mm each for a total carat weight of about 1.45 carat total for the pair. This is an estimate as I do not remove stones from their antique settings for exact weights.
They measure about 13.5 mm top to bottom from the top of the ear wire to the base of the earring.
This pair of earrings weighs 3.1 grams combined.
IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:
As mentioned one of the lever backs is very weak. It has no spring loaded snap back and little tension remains so when handling the back flops open and closed but it has a hooked end that Does latch into the lever so once closed, it stays closed to the extent that it even snaps into place. Gentle handling to the 100 year old hinge is required though as it could snap if too much pressure is provided, in which case you'd maybe have to turn it into a pendant (still highly sought after, but hinges can be tough to repair). I will say these are the easier earrings to insert as the ear wire is fixed and entered at the front of the ear, vs. some of the dormeuse that enter from the back of the ear and have to latch - these are easier to handle. Sold as is - 24/7 and overnight wear definitely not recommended.
Typical antique diamonds both with natural inclusions slightly eye visible. No really large inky spots but some cloudy carbon smatterings with crystal in one, and an area of crystal inclusions in the other. They are wonderfully chunky cuts with the slight warmth we antique collectors love to find, not glaring but just a softer antique look which is swoon worthy.
Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
