Antique 5 CARATS Old Mine Rose Cut DIAMOND Almost Riviera NECKLACE Choker Chain French 18k Gold Silver Bar Bezel Edwardian Art Deco Collar

ABOUT:
We antique jewelry addicts adore an old mine cut diamond necklace! This is a unique antique one from my personal collection that I purchased in Paris and enjoyed layering with its short length around the neck and interesting fabrication.

It doesn't quite classify as a riviere first because of the bar links instead of the individually set diamonds, but also because the diamonds don't quiiiiiiite go all the way around. There's about 3 inches of chain at the back which was perfect for me because it gave the appearance of an eternity chain but with a few less diamonds in a spot where you wouldn't see them anyway. : )

Intricate fabrication with the necklace consisting of 18k yellow gold bars that are topped in silver and set with old mine and rose cut diamonds totaling over 5 carats. Each of the 15 bar panels has a bezel set old mine cut diamond on one end and is then hinged to the adjacent panel to allow a bit of movement and arc around the neck. Most the diamonds on the necklace are old mine cuts, some elongated and a few small peruzzis even, then with tiny little rose cut diamond spacers set into the openwork X detail in the center of the five middle panels. It just gives it an all over diamond encrusted but still intricate and ornate pattern. A beautiful sparkle and a great antique look!

I wish I knew the stories this piece could tell. A few of the bar links have the French stamps for 18k gold and silver on the sides so we know that is their fabrication, but the chain at the back is 18k white gold, hallmarked as such and likely later? I do believe it was always a necklace though because of the arc of the bar links, they don't work as a bracelet. It is possible it was always a choker for a Victorian woman with a tiny neck and the length was added after. It's a unique one, certainly one of a kind and a bit hard to describe. : ) I suppose we could refer to this as a diamond choker chain or tennis necklace? I enjoyed layering it with other chains, a long station chain or a shorter chain with seven larger diamonds as seen in photos (the seven stone necklace is also listed and available in the shop.)

Please note the measurements as I have small hands and it can be difficult to decipher scale from photos, especially with the zoomed images that I am required to present for detail.

MEASUREMENTS:

Chain is about 13 3/4 inches long, it can't be stretched end to end with the curved fabrication but that's what I'm getting as I awkwardly try to curve a tape measure around it, haha.

It weighs 13.8 grams.

There are so many small diamonds that carat weight is a Conservative Estimate. There are 16 bezel set old mine cuts at 3 to 4.2mm each, chunky cuts totaling 2.5 to 2.75 carat in larger stones, and then 76 small ones measuring 1.7 to 3mm and then 10 tiny chips. I'm getting a total weight of over five carats. Again this is a loose and conservative estimate as all the tiny hand chiseled stones are in varying shapes and depths.

Each of the bar panels is about 19mm give and about 5mm at the deepest.

IMPORTANT CONDITION NOTES:

Completely functional, the clasp works well. Some patina and surface wear which could be polished up some but typically my buyers prefer original patina. It looks perfect in my opinion.

Typical antique hand cut diamonds cut in much more limited supply so they are not all bright white and crystal clear. It's difficult to do a detailed report as there are over 100 diamonds, each one of a kind. The larger bezel set ones are all well set, some with a slight varying warmth, some of it due to the setting. A handful are warm to pale yellow in color which I love to find in my antique stones, as the majority of stones from the period actually came from mines that produced warmer colored rough diamonds. One of the bezel set stones towards the back has a very high / chunky crown that has an area of small chips with flakes of loss to the edge but it still appears complete and round and fills the setting. The smaller diamonds also vary, some frosty, some with a rough edge here or there. Some with warm to gray hues and a wonderful texture to the piece.

The metal work is all very tidy and expertly constructed. The larger bezel set stones are all very well held. And the bar fabrication is sturdy to wear, I don't see any weak connection points to the back. But I would keep an eye on the smaller diamonds and not wear it 24/7 or with heavy chains of the exact same length to rattle around it. I say this because of the tiny diamonds set with tiny bead prongs, some are a bit crooked in the settings from movement and wear. None of the stones feeble or wobble but the fabrication itself is on the more delicate side with the four little 100 year old bead prongs holding each stone.

One small diamond has some adhesive residue around it seen under magnification but not while wearing, this to just one of the over 100 diamonds on the piece, and there are no stones missing.

This situation pretty much applies to all my antique pieces of this age with so many small stones. Selling in its original condition as trying to fortify each tiny bead prong would overwork and muddy the piece so we typically just wear and enjoy them and deal with it if something occurs, which never did the many times I wore it. It is priced with these things in mind and sold as is, a 100+ year old diamond chain with 100+ antique diamonds.

As mentioned, it is intended to wear short / close to the neck. My neck is about 13 inches around so on the petite side (and we all come in wonderfully different shapes and sizes!). It could be lengthened with an extender at the back but it is intended to be worn as a choker to hold the stones in place facing out.

Phew - I think that's about everything! : /
My product listings are always typed out by me - no AI, and apologies if they are wordy but I always do my very best to give a clear and honest description. All the above notes are very picky and probably don't do it justice. It is a fabulous piece, highly collectible, sturdy and wearable, one of my best honestly which is why I kept it for so long.

But of course Due to age, please note this is not a mint condition item.

Please note that all my pieces are pre-owned and in estate condition. They will have patina, surface wear, a few small nicks. These pieces may also have evidence of a sizing, some build up around the stones and / or inclusions seen under magnification, typical for antique pieces. I have mentioned any noticeable issues above and they are all still wearable and eager to be loved and accepted for many years to come, (the preservation of antique jewelry, even those with signs of their age and history, is important to me. : )
But - Please note due to age, this piece is not in mint condition. Pictures also serve as part of the description and condition report so please utilize the zoom feature which will magnify any wear significantly more than what is visible to the eye while wearing : )
